Given the rate of release though, I’m fairly confident it will soon be the only client I need. I still have to do interactive rebases in other clients for example. Having just come out of beta though, it doesn’t quite do everything yet. Other git clients tend to crash more in my experience anyway.Īs i said earlier, they have really been piling on lots of new releases. 5 seconds of wasted time once a day is easily made up by the other efficiency savings. The nice thing is though when it crashes it does recover itself to some extent, and you just have to reopen the repo. Now V1.0 is out, that is down to about 1 crash every day or 2. It probably crashed out about a dozen times a day for me with some releases. There are certainly issues, but they are being dealt with fast.ĭuring the beta, there was a lot of crashing. Like any product, it doesn’t all smell like roses. So switching platform doesn’t mean switching tools or a slightly different experience. The joys of modern technology mean the same code runs on all platforms. All of these features make it easy, and importantly save a lot of time. You can even make new pull requests in a far easier way than on github. Pull requests are visible directly on the branch graph. Adding remotes is as easy as selecting one from a drop down list. From there it makes cloning repositories simple.
Connecting it to github is as easy as a little OAuth magic. Instead it delivered something that took away from the advantages of git, and gave a far less superior experience. It promised tight integration with github, and an easy to use client. One of the bigger disappointments I’ve come across in this space has to be github desktop app. Just taking a look at their release notes though makes it obvious they genuinely care about fixing things and making the product the best it can be for its users. Most of the time I’ve been using it, Gitkraken has been in beta, and so one would expect a healthy flow of updates.

That comes in sharp contrast to the meandering experience with clients like git extensions, where multiple windows start spawning as a thin ugly veil on top of the command line. It’s obvious that a lot of care has gone in to making each action quick, with no more user input than is necessary. The main draw Gitkraken has for me is its sheer ease of use.
It really does:īut beyond just the looks of it, what is it like to use? My initial reaction upon using it was “damn that looks nice”. It was in invite only beta stage, and so wanting to be a cool kid i signed up. I found these just as difficult to figure out as the command line and life was still too short. These products are essentially UI wrappers around the command line arguments, with some useful but ugly branch visualisations bundled in. Most of my colleagues were using something like source tree or git extensions. Learning all the command line commands is often seen as a bit of a rite of passage for developers. Git can be a bit of a learning curve to start with. My current company however works exclusively with git. It did the job and we didn’t see much point in wasting time exploring alternatives. In my previous company we used subversion pretty much exclusively. My experience with git hasn’t been long lived.
The dilemma: do I learn the git command line That product is Gitkraken, and I think it’s pretty awesome. I thought I would do something a little different this time around, and share my views on a product that I’ve been using for a few months now.
